Most sources agree that 35-50 hours of driving lessons is better. The average amount of driving lessons should be 40-45 hours before taking your driving test. Some people decide that 20-30 hours or maybe even less is enough – but remember that the more lessons you take, the better you will become at driving.

You can start your driving lessons before taking the theory test
An automatic is usually easier to learn in – you put your car in ‘D’ for ‘drive’ and off you go. With a manual car, you’ll need to make sure you’re in the right gear for the speed and road conditions.
While they may be more expensive per lesson, compared to shorter 1 hour lessons, they may ultimately save money by requiring fewer lessons overall. This is because the student is able to progress more quickly and efficiently with longer lessons, ultimately leading to a shorter overall learning period.
You’ll need to be 17 or older. If you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you can begin driving lessons when you’re 16. You need to have a valid provisional driving licence.
In your first lesson you’ll likely be shown a few of the basics, such as setting your seat and mirrors to be right for you. You will also learn how to secure and manoeuvre the car using the handbrake, gears and of course, the basics of clutch control. First driving lesson nerves are natural so don’t worry!
