Understanding the Manoeuvre

Forward bay parking involves driving your vehicle forward into a designated parking space. It is a common requirement in supermarket car parks and public parking areas.

The challenge lies in the geometry of the car. Since you steer with the front wheels, the rear wheels take a shorter path (cut the corner). This means you must position your car wide and turn late to enter the bay straight without crossing the lines.

Finding Your Reference

The key to a successful forward bay park is knowing when to steer. Most learners turn too early or too late. Use this reference point method.

The Setup: Position your car as far away from the target bay as possible (on the opposite side of the lane) to create a wide turning circle.
The Reference: Wait until the first line of your target bay aligns with your side mirror (or shoulder, depending on car size).
The Turn: At the reference point, steer quickly to full lock while moving very slowly. As you enter the bay, straighten the wheel as the car becomes parallel.

Correction Techniques

It's okay not to get it right the first time. The examiner is looking for safe observations and the ability to correct your position, not a robot.

Too Close to a Line?

If you turned too early, you might cross the near line. Stop. Check all around (6-point check). Select reverse.

Reverse & Realign

Reverse straight back about a car length. This resets your angle. Check around again, select 1st gear, and steer into the center.

Wonky in the Bay?

If you are in the lines but crooked, you can fix it. Reverse out straight, then drive forward straightening your wheel.

Better to correct and be safe than to park poorly and risk a door ding.
